Crochet Marquise Shawl

Marquise - The beauty Among Shawls

crochet marquise shawl

Description

Marquise is a large flamboyant crochet triangular shawl with a lacy edge. It was made from two contrasting types of yarn – the basic dark red yarn is in the chess pattern, while the other one is mohair in soft rose tones that was used to crochet the flower motifs and the border.

instructions

The main part of the Marquise shawl (from dark red yarn) was made in crochet shell stitches according to Diagram 1 (schema 1). However, due to the thin yarn I was using, I changed the original pattern a little bit. So, instead of working shells of 4tr and ch2 as Diagram 1 shows , I worked my shells with 5tr and ch1. For the round motifs I followed Diagram 2  to the letter (schema 2).

Below you will find detailed written instructions for my version of the Marquise crochet shawl.

Central Part of the Shawl

Using dark red yarn, follow Diagram 1, and do a total of 24 rows like this:

Start by chaining 8 and close in a circle with a sl.st.

Row 1 – In the circle do ch5, 1tr, ch1, shell, ch5 (=corner), shell, ch1, 2tr. Turn.

Row 2 – Ch5, 1tr in next st, ch1, shell in ch1-space, then do ch1; in the corner do (shell, ch5, shell); continue along the other side: ch1, shell in next ch1-space, ch1, 2tr. Turn.

Row 3 – ch5, 1tr, (ch1, shell in next ch1-space)repeat to the corner. In the corner(ch1, shell, ch5, shell). Continue like this: (ch1, shell in next ch1-space)repeat to the last ch1-space. In the last ch1-space work ch1, shell, ch1, 2tr in next 2 sts. Turn.

From row 4 to 24 – repeat row 3.

Next, crochet along the  diagonal sides of the shawl by working arches of ch5 like this:
Row 25 – 1sc in first st, ch5, 1sc in ch1-space, (ch5, 1sc in next ch1-space)repeat to the corner. In the corner work (ch5, 1sc, ch5, 1sc). Continue working along the other diagonal side like you did along the first, like this:
(1sc in next ch1-space, ch5)repeat to the last ch1-space. In the last ch1-space work (1sc, ch5, 1sc in next st). DO NOT TURN, but continue along the upper edge of the shawl: (shell, ch1)repeat to the end of rnd. All shells are done in ch1-spaces between 2 shells of the previous row/round.
, and on the upper edge repeat *5dc, ch1* to the end. Shells should be placed in each space between 2 shells of previous row.

Round Motifs

Using melange yarn, make 13 round motifs following Diagram 2. In the last row of every motif attach each one to the sides of the shawl and one to another, according to the diagram. Attach the round motifs only to the 2 diagonal sides of the shawl.

Border

Change to dark red yarn and continue with the shell pattern again as Diagram 1 shows, for 5 more rows only on 2 diagonal sides of the shawl.
After these 5 rows of shells, crochet around the whole piece with melange yarn, like this:
Rnd 1 – *ch5, 1sc in next ch1-space, ch5, 1sc in 3rd tr of the shell*. Repeat from * to *. Finish the rnd with ch2 and 1dc in the last st.
Rnd 2 – *ch5, 1sc in ch5-space, ch5, 1sc in the same ch5-space*. Repeat from * to *. Finish the rnd with ch2 and 1dc in the last st.
Rnds 3 and 4 – work arches of ch6 above each arch of previous rnd : *ch6, 1sc in arch*. Repeat from * to *. Break yarn. Finish the rnd with ch3 and 1dc in the last st. Break yarn.
