Monique Skirt
Soft, bright, and full of charm — a romantic piece that flares in summer breeze
This tutorial teaches you how to draft, cut and sew a half circle long skirt. It will be the fastest and easiest way you ever created a simple, yet, gorgeous, rich skirt in no time, with minimum effort.
A Skirt Full of Memories
Every once in a while, a handmade piece becomes more than something you wear — it turns into a companion to your days, gathering moments, travels, and compliments along the way. That’s exactly how I feel about this half-circle flare skirt. What began as a simple piece of fabric from a local shop turned into one of my most loved creations, following me across countries and years, and still turning heads today.
How It All Began
Back in 2015 or 2016, I stumbled upon a peach-colored fabric in a small shop in Belgrade. It was covered in elegant black birds with long tails, roses, and leaves — a print so rich and alive, I couldn’t resist. The fabric wasn’t just pretty; it was practical too. It never wrinkles, feels soft against the skin, and turned out to be one of my best finds ever. For just a little, I brought home what would become my most loved skirt.
A Simple Idea, A Timeless Piece
The skirt first came to life on my sewing table, cut in the simplest way — two quarters of a circle joined into one flowing piece, finished with a lacy border above the hem. Nothing complicated, just a little math, a few seams, and suddenly there it was: a half-circle flare skirt with a personality of its own.
The First Journey
The first time I wore it was unforgettable — a dream trip with my husband through Italy, Spain, France, and Monaco. I remember walking in Cannes, sitting on the red-carpeted steps outside the festival building, and feeling almost like a diva. In Spain, the skirt danced in the Mediterranean breeze; on stairways, it trailed behind me with such elegance, I couldn’t help but smile. It moved like it had its own rhythm — playful, graceful, everlasting.
Everyday Elegance
Since then, this skirt has been everywhere with me: at work, on long walks, at special occasions. It adapts to every setting depending on how I style it — sneakers and a tee for everyday, heels and jewelry for something more refined. Friends even asked me to make them one in the same fabric, and not long ago a stranger stopped me in the street to say how gorgeous it looked.
Why It Deserves a Story
I truly believe that this skirt deserves its own story. It’s proof that sometimes the simplest ideas — like drawing a quarter-circle — can become the most timeless pieces. A skirt that’s easy to make, yet always makes you feel special.
Passing the Story On
This skirt has already found admirers among my friends and even strangers on the street — and now, I’d love to share it with you. From Belgrade to Cannes, it has carried me through beautiful moments, and I think it’s ready to collect new memories with others too.
Because of that I’ve prepared a free sewing pattern for this half-circle flare skirt. It’s simple, versatile, and ready to be made in any fabric you love. When you sew your own version, I’d be so happy if you shared it with me — the colors, the prints, the stories you’ll create while wearing it. Who knows, maybe your skirt will become the next most-loved piece in your wardrobe.
