Moonchild - Crochet & Knit Lacy Beach Set

Skirt, Halter Top, Hat & Bracelet

Moonchild is a light summer knit & crochet set. Moonchild Halter Top, brimmed/cowboy hat, lacy skirt and a chic bracelet create a perfect beach and leisure assembly. Read about it and get the pattern below!

A Skirt Born From Moonlight

If you remember my Moonchild Lilac Crop-Top, that soft, simple piece of summer, made in cotton yarn, you’ll be happy to meet its newest companion: the Moonchild Skirt. The two now form a growing set—one that feels like it stepped straight out of a warm breeze under a full moon. Light, simple, and made with love, this outfit is perfect for barefoot days and salt-kissed evenings.

However, that’s not all! To be more precise, while writing the skirt instructions, quite unexpectedly, I came up with an idea to make a bracelet and brimmed hat as well. With 2 wooden buttons, the same like on the top, both fit perfectly in this boho idea.

Echoes of the Top

You already read about my Crop-Top Lilac Moonchild. While the bra cups are composed of dense dc stitches framed with a lacy border, the underbust area has the same lace pattern like the border around the cups.

The skirt, similarly, mirrors the crop-top with a crocheted waistband made of simple yet elegant stitches: ch3, skip one stitch, single crochet—a rhythmic repeat that echoes like a quiet mantra. This airy section is worked in rounds, alternating with a couple of rounds of single crochet to create solid lacy structure. It’s the same pattern I used in the white Moonchild top, so the two pieces feel like they were meant for each other from the very beginning.

The bracelet and Beach Hat also represent a little echo of the above mentioned lace, and thus, join the whole set in their boho, sand, and sea style.

But from this point, things start to get really fun concerning the skirt…

A Shift Into Knitting

After the third crochet repeat, the design transitions into knitting—still worked in the round, and using only the knit stitch. Simple, meditative, and beautifully fluid. This part of the skirt flows down effortlessly, creating a gentle contrast in texture. 4mm and 5mm circular knitting needles keep the stitches neat and close, letting the yarn do the talking.

When Yarn Runs Out, Creativity Begins

But as sometimes happens, my yarn had other plans—it ran out before I reached the desired length of the short skirt I had hoped for. Instead of giving up or waiting to find a matching skein, I turned to one of my favorite tricks: dropped stitches. In the final round, I let every fourth stitch fall, unraveling beautifully down the fabric. This intentional dropping creates delicate vertical “ladders” that stretch and open up the piece, adding both width and length with no extra yarn needed. To finish off the stretched stitches, I switched to larger 8mm needles for the final row—since the loops had grown too large for the smaller ones. The result is soft, flowing, and a little bit wild. (If you’d like to try this technique, I also used it in my Lorena Shawlsee it here.)

Made for the Beach… or Beyond

Because of the dropped stitches and light yarn, the skirt is semi-transparent—making it perfect for slipping over a bikini at the beach, or layering with a lining for a stroll through the city. I finished the waistband with a hand-twisted cord made from the same cotton yarn, and added three small wooden beads at each end. These earthy details bring the piece full circle and match the Moonchild Top’s style perfectly.

Balance in Motion

There’s something about this set—the way crochet and knitting meet, the contrast of open space and dense texture—that feels a lot like balance. And maybe that’s what Moonchild is all about: a little wild, a little grounded. A dance between Mother Earth and the wandering Moon child.
