Sew Boho “Dress-Skirt” From A Vintage Curtain

From Curtain to Couture: Meet the Boho DresSkirt

A romantic transformation with a vintage soul

This tutorial represents the easiest way to draft, cut and sew a stunning and one of a kind boho skirt dress, which can be worn as a wedding gown as well.

The Idea Behind My Boho Skirt Dress

The Boho Dress Skirt presented in the photos was something I wanted to sew from an old granny’s curtain, which had been lying in my mom’s and then in my own closet for a few decades. Unsuitable to decorate the windows again, not only due to its size that didn’t fit a single one of them, but also because of several yellow stains from being unused for so long, I decided to transform it into a skirt which can be converted to a dress.

I came up with this idea since I couldn’t make up my mind. To be precise, I didn’t know whether I wanted to turn the curtain into a dress or a layered ruffle skirt, which I’d wanted to possess for so long. After a couple of days of changing my mind every minute, I had an epiphany! I realized that just by lifting the first ruffle up to the shoulders I created a transformer DresSkirt! Boy was I overwhelmed with joy!

Instead of shoulder seams the dress stays in place by attaching 2 flower broaches, which adds to an even more romantic, vintage look. Therefore, the lavish old-fashioned lacy dress resembles a wedding gown

description

DresSkirt consists of 5 ruffles placed one beneath the other.

This piece has elastic band inserted in the waist, and the whole garment has a lining of thin white cotton fabric. Basically, you sew all the ruffles onto the lining.

When you lift the 1st ruffle to form a dress, under arms there is extra material with openings. However, the looseness and fluffy look of this model allows it, so the excess fabric falls softly under the arms and is not visible.

level - basic

To make this Dress-Skirt, you will need basic knowledge of sewing. A special technique needed for this project is being able to gather the material and  as such to sew it onto the lining.

inspiration

The idea for a 2 in 1 garment came to me quite spontaneously, but ruffled skirts and dresses, like this lacy one I found on the net, is something that gives me endless inspiration.
