Crochet Poncho “Mexicana Marina”

2 in 1: Mexicana Marina Poncho-Skirt

A Patchwork Beauty with a Vibrant Twist

Poncho Mexicana Marina – crochet patchwork poncho with drawstring – PDF pattern

You can crochet poncho Mexicana Marina in two days. This piece has rich fringe and a drawstring around neckline with tassels for decoration.

A Poncho Inspired by Craft, Culture, and Movement

Crochet Poncho Mexicana Marina carries the same artistic spirit as the Hooded Poncho Mexicana, but with its own unique charm and personality. Part of the beloved Mexicana collection, this design blends tradition, craftsmanship, and modern versatility — all wrapped in vibrant colors that celebrate joyful creativity.

Just like its hooded sister-piece, Mexicana Marina builds on the inspiration that shaped my participation in the International Crafts Fair in Mexico City. The Mexicana collection began its journey there, back in 2018, after earlier successes in 2015 and 2017. These experiences continue to inspire every new piece I create under the Mexicana name.

The Mexicana Marina Poncho is a continuation of that story — a design that embraces playful color, practical comfort, and a touch of romantic softness.

A Timeless Patchwork Design — With New Details

Mexicana Marina uses the same beautiful square motifs found in the hooded version. The construction remains familiar and comforting:

  • S/M size: 4 motifs
  • L/XL size: 6 motifs

But the details are what make this variation truly special:

No Hood — Instead, a Soft Drawstring Neckline

The neckline is worked differently and finished with a delicate drawstring threaded through the final round. Two tassels decorate the ends, giving the poncho a gentle, playful finish.

Soft, Luxurious Fringe on Every Stitch

Unlike the hooded version, Mexicana Marina features dense, silky fringe attached to every stitch around the hem. Made with Alize Baby Best DK, the fringe is incredibly soft, shiny, and lightweight — adding movement and elegance with every step.

No Border — Just Flow and Color

This version keeps the focus on the motifs and the fringe, resulting in a lighter, more romantic look perfect for transitional seasons like spring and early autumn.

The Best Part? It’s Also a Skirt!

One of the most brilliant features of Mexicana Marina is its multi-functionality:
You can wear it not only as a poncho but also as a skirt.

Yes — a skirt!

Just turn it sideways, adjust the drawstring at the waist, and enjoy a completely different garment. This makes it a perfect choice for dancing events (and yes, I absolutely plan to wear mine for dancing nights!).

The fabric drapes beautifully, the fringe moves gracefully, and the vibrant colors make it wonderfully eye-catching.

Vibrant Colors for a Joyful Look

Mexicana Marina is worked in a lively palette of:

  • lavender
  • pink–fuchsia
  • blue–purple
  • pink–purple

Together, they create a cheerful, uplifting harmony that makes the poncho feel both fresh and bold.

Design

This poncho consists of 4 or 6 large square motifs, which depends on the size. It is decorated with fringe and two tassels at the ends of the drawstring. The yarn used for the blue and pink poncho is a selection of 4 colors, while the dim brown-blue one used up 3 colors of different yarn. Both items are crocheted from blend yarn. Exact amount of yarn is given in the PDF instructions. Yarn used in both models are leftovers of blend fibers.

Size S/M

Only 4 square motifs for the poncho, which you can style in 2 different ways. Place the central diagonal motif at the front with the drawstring falling down mid chest. Or, turn the central motif to one shoulder and let the tassels run down your side.

The most beautiful feature of this piece is the fact you can put it on as a skirt too. Perfect for dancing steps, or a romantic night out, the skirt can also be worn in 2 ways, depending on how you rotate it. Turn the front diagonal motif to the side so that the drawstrings falls to the hip, and you’ll get a completely new look.

Size L/XL

With 6 square motifs you will get a large, wide poncho, suitable for size L/XL. I apologize for the poor quality of images for this size because this piece was made several years ago and is no longer in my possession. I wish I could take new photos of it with a better camera. This 6-piece poncho can also be used as a skirt. Try it out, experiment with colors and different types of yarn, and, most importantly, have fun making it!

level

Making this poncho requires lower-intermediate crocheting skills and being familiar
with round crochet. I would certainly encourage experienced beginners to give this
project a try and improve their crocheting skills. Stitches used in this pattern are chain,
single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet.

Whoa! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It’s on a completely different subject but it has
pretty much the same page layout and design.
Excellent choice of colors! It’s very effortless to find out any topic on net as compared to textbooks, as I found this article
at this web page. Its such as you read my thoughts!
You seem to understand so much about this, such as you wrote the ebook in it or something.
I think that you simply can do with a few p.c. to pressure the message house a little bit, however other than that, this
is fantastic blog. A great read. I’ll definitely be
    back. http://foxnews.net
