Crochet “Diamond” Shawl

The Rediscovered Diamond Shawl

How Moving Back in with My Parents Led Me to This Forgotten Crochet Treasure

This post gives you free detailed instructions which you can use to crochet this beautiful, rich woolen or cotton shawl with the pattern of diamond.

(Un)Discovered Treasure

Some crochet projects never really leave you—even if they end up tucked away for years, hidden in old boxes in your parents’ attic. My Diamond Shawl is one of those pieces. And its rediscovery comes with a little story I’d love to share with you.

An Unexpected Move and an Unexpected Find

A few years ago, my husband and I sold our flat rather suddenly because we decided it was time to buy a house. But things didn’t go quite as planned—we sold the apartment before finding the perfect home. The result? We ended up moving back in with my parents for what turned into a five-month stay.

Let me tell you: being in your early forties and suddenly living with your parents again is…an interesting life twist. But actually, it was a really lovely time. We laughed a lot, shared old memories, and—most importantly for this story—dug through closets, boxes, and drawers full of forgotten treasures. Old family photos, retro jewelry, vintage clothes…and then, this shawl. My Diamond Shawl! I had completely forgotten about it.

I originally crocheted this shawl years ago from a pattern I clipped from an old 1970s knit-and-crochet magazine—though I sadly don’t remember which one. The magazine itself is long gone, but somehow the pattern survived in my notes. It’s not my original design, but I loved it so much I made two versions: one in bright red bulky wool for cozy winters, and another in soft white cotton for spring and summer days. When I found the shawls again, I knew I had to share the pattern with you, to bring this beauty back to life.

A Diamond Pattern That Never Goes Out of Style

The charm of this shawl is all in its clever construction. A large central diamond catches the eye right away, framed by stripes of smaller diamonds that build out from the center like ripples in a pond. The rich fringe adds the perfect finishing touch—swinging playfully with every movement.

And depending on your yarn choice, this shawl is a chameleon. Make it in thick, warm wool for a winter statement piece, or keep it light and breezy with cotton for those fresh spring mornings or cool summer nights.

A Classic Reborn

So here it is—rescued from a forgotten box, dusted off, and ready to find its way onto your hook. I may not have designed this pattern myself, but it holds a special place in my heart—and now, I hope, in yours too.

Stay tuned for the full tutorial and diagrams so you can make your own version of this timeless shawl.
