"Erigeneia" Crochet Shawl
Where warm shades meet soft light — a romantic piece inspired by the colors of Mexico.
A Memory Woven in Yarn
Some designs stay with you long after they’re gone.
Erigeneia Shawl was one of those pieces — created with love, sold at an international crafts fair in Mexico City as a part of my Mexicana Collection, and remembered ever since. The inspiration came from the exquisite German designer Silke Terhorst, but by the city itself too: the warmth of red walls, the silver-grey streets after rain, and the endless sky stretching above them.
Crocheted in red, light grey, and grey, the triangular shawl captured that unique blend of passion and calm — like the moment before sunset when the sky turns crimson for just a few breaths of time. A single tassel at one corner gave it a playful, bohemian finish.
Colors That Tell a Story
The combination of red and grey is always striking, but in this piece, it became something more. The red yarn symbolized the vibrancy and rhythm of Mexico to me — music, movement, and heart. The greys brought balance and serenity, softening the boldness while adding depth. Together, they mirrored the Mexican sky itself — ever changing, full of contrast, always alive.
Shaped by Simplicity
The shawl’s triangular form made it both timeless and versatile. Draped over the shoulders, it framed the face beautifully; worn as a scarf, it added a pop of color to any outfit. The tassel detail at one point offered movement and charm — just enough to catch the eye without overwhelming the design.
Although the stitches were simple, their rhythm made the piece soothing to create — almost meditative. Sometimes the simplest patterns become the most expressive when combined with the right colors and texture.
Crochet Pattern
I found the crochet pattern for this shawl on a blog of the above mentioned shawl designer whose name is Silke Terhorst. You’ll find her blog here, while her free instructions for the Erigeneia shawl are available in several languages on Ravelry.
In the photo below you can see the original shawl in stunning shades of autumn.
A Journey Beyond the Yarn
Selling this shawl in Mexico City was a special moment — a reminder that handmade creations carry stories across borders. Each thread of Erigeneia holds a piece of that memory: the light, the air, and the warmth of people who stopped by to look, smile, and touch the fabric.
It’s more than a crochet project — it’s a keepsake of place and feeling, a fragment of a sky that continues to inspire new designs.
