Mexicana Elegante Shawl
Timeless Beauty of Classic and Elegance
Mexicana Elegante knit and crochet shawl was sold at The International Crafts Fair in Mexico City in 2018, together with several other shawls and ponchos, which you can see in the post Mexicana Collection. Hence the name for this one and all other pieces from this collection.
Although I designed the shawl way back in 2018, Mexicana Elegante is still very popular and some ladies have asked me for knit and crochet instructions. That’s why I decided to write this post and a written tutorial for this piece, since it is a combination of those two techniques.

level
As stated above, the shawl uses knit and crochet techniques. For both techniques you will need intermediate knowledge. The upper part of the shawl uses ribbed texture on 2 needles. To obtain the ribbing, you will only need two basic stitches – stockinette stitch and garter stitch. On the other hand, the bottom part of the shawl has crocheted mesh pattern. Crochet stitches I used for the mesh are double crochet, treble crochet, chain, single crochet.
Material
- About 200 gr of yarn for needles/hook 3 to 4 mm (US needles 3 to 6, hook D-3 to G-6)
- Knitting needles 4 mm (US size 6, UK size 8)
- Crochet hook 4 mm (US G-6)
- 2 markers
size
The size of the shawl can vary depending on the type of yarn and your manner of knitting/crocheting, i.e. whether you work loosely or tightly.
Approximate dimensions of the shawl are the following:
Height – 64 cm / 25 in
Upper edge length – 130 cm / 51 in

The Countess Shawl is a classic piece of accessory crocheted in double bobble stitch with rich fringe.
Mexicana Hooded Poncho was made in patchwork technique, consisting of 6 or 8 square motifs, depending on the size – 2 for the hood and 4/6 that make up the body.
Mexicana Elegante was made by combining 2 techniques – knitted upper part and crocheted mesh border.
Lorena Shawl is another classic piece of accessory made in 2 techniques – crochet and knitting. The central part of the shawl was knitted with dropped stitches, while the rich border is done by crocheting treble stitches.
You say that the instructions are free but I am unable to get to the pattern without paying for it. I think I will pass on that.
Dear Elizabeth,
Thanks for the reply and your interest in this shawl.
I’m afraid I didn’t write that this pattern was offered for free. Could you, please, let me know where you came across this information. The pattern is a payable one, and can be downloaded on Ravelry and Love Crafts for 4.00 EUR.
On the PATTERN A: Stockinette Stitch instructions – Row 1 appears to be missing and starts with Row 2?
Hi, Linda! Thank you very much. I wrote the Stockinette Stitch from 2. row on purpose so that people don’t get confused with the initial 1. row of the shawl which is different than the other, later first-row repeats of the Stockinette Stitch. But I guess I caused more confusion instead 🙂 Do you have a suggestion? Maybe for the starting row of the shawl I could write “foundation row” instead of Row 1? And then to change numbers in stockinette – Rows 1 and 2 instead of Rows 2 and 3. How does that sound? It would probably be more clear. I hope I haven’t caused even more bewilderness with this comment, haha! 😀
Thank you for the free pattern. This is a beautiful shawl, and after reading through the pattern I see a question that is very unclear. Under the knitting instructions, Pattern A, you give directions for rows 1, 2, 3, and then you skip row 4, and give directions for rows 5-10. Could you explain what to do in row 4?
Dear Brenda,
Thank you so much for your kind words and especially for noticing the mistakes in the pattern. I have corrected the 2 mistakes I had in both stockinette and garter stitch patterns. Please, write in the comments if you spot any other errors in the instructions. I truly appreciate the effort and it makes me very happy to receive every kind of feedback. I’m so happy you liked the shawl! 🙂
Wishing you lots of joy in making this piece!
I forgot to say that in the stockinette stitch pattern the repeat should be from rows 4 to 10, not from 5 to 10. Also, I found a mistake in the garter stitch pattern, so, please, take a look at the corrected pattern.
Cheers!
