inspiration
The idea for this hat came to me through the Internet, with warm autumn colors. My hat, however, is in the shades of the sea, ebony, and marble – turquoise and dark brown on the white background. Since I couldn’t find any instructions for it, I modeled the hat and wrote instructions by myself.
Brief Description of Completing the Hat
1. The Square Motif
The first step for making the Fiscardo hat is choosing the desired motif as a base of the hat. In detailed written PDF pattern, which you can buy here, you will see that I chose the Willow Square which I found on the Internet. For head circumference 55-56 cm (21.5-22 in) one side of the square motif should be 12-13 cm (4.7-5.1 in) long. For the entire hat you will need 10 square motifs – 4 for the crown and 6 for the brim.
2. The Crown
4 motifs of the crown are joined together to form a tube with slip stitches by inserting the hook in the back loops only. Then, you crochet the top of the hat from the outer side towards the center by decreasing the number of stitches.
3. The Brim
Before joining the 6 motifs of the brim to the crown, you crochet 2 rounds of sc onto the crown bottom edge. The 1st round is without increasing, while in the 2nd round every 2nd stitch is doubled. In the next round you attach the remaining 6 square motifs.
4. Filling in space between the brim motifs
Every space between 2 motifs in the brim is crocheted in short rows with turns by working several stitches together in corners.
5. Reinforcing the brim and starching the hat
To ensure a firm brim edge, you will crochet the last round of the brim over a wire. At the same time, the brim needs to be flexible enough to enable shaping according to your desire. When the crocheting process is over, the entire hat is starched with sugar syrup and placed on a mold to dry completely.
After drying, the hat is very firm but flexible as well, so you can fold and pack it in a suitcase if you are traveling. When unfolded, you can shape the hat again at your own preference.
