Why crochet slippers?
I’ve already written about how tormenting and complicated it is for me to knit socks, slippers, booties, so I’m in constant search of alternative ways of making home footwear. When I find an idea which involves crocheting, all cold, gloomy days become warmer and sunnier. The same thing happened with these slippers which I’ve recently found on Pinterest. At first I crocheted the blue ones, and as they were so easy and fast to make, the red and beige pair quickly emerged under my hook.
level - experienced beginner
To crochet this pair of home slippers, you need basic level in crochet. The stitches used in this item are single crochet, half double crochet, and chain.
material
- About 50 gr (1 ball) of thick yarn for hook no. 6 or 6,5
- Hook no. 6
- Scissors
- Sewing needle for wool
Inspiration
I found a tutorial for these slippers on the website Make & Do Crew. Although I did follow Jess’ instructions, due to the differences in yarn weight, tension and hook, I adjusted and modified the pattern, so in further text you can read my version. However, you should definitely take a look at Jess’ original pattern with slip-protect soles.
instructions
The slippers are worked spiraly, i.e. without initial chain at the beginning of each round, so as not to have a visible seam.
Abbreviations
ch – chain
sl.st. – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
Front part from toes to mid sole
1. Rnd – Start with ch2 and do 6sc in the 2nd stitch.
2. Rnd – 2sc in each st (=12sts)
3. Rnd – (1sc, 2sc in next st)repeat 5 times more (=18sts)
4. Rnd – (2sc, 2sc in next st)repeat 5 times more (=24sts)
From rnd 5 work without increasing – 1sc in each st around. After 7 or 8 rnds check if the slipper fits. You can do that by squishing the piece and inserting your toes inside. If all toes are lying comfortably inside the slipper, keep on like this.
If this part of the slipper is too tight, unravel the work until rnd 4, and in rnd 5 do another increase – (3sc, 2sc in next st)repeat to the end of rnd. (=30sts).
In case this part of the slipper is too loose, unravel the work until rnd 3, and skip rnd 4, i.e. continue working without increases from rnd 4.
Crochet the piece until you reach to mid sole. Then start working the heel.
Heel
Now work on half of the piece with turns. If you had 24sts in total in each rnd, work the heel on 12sts. On the other hand, if you had more or fewer sts, divide the number of sts in half, and work on that number of sts.
Place markers on the first and last sts which will be of use later. Work sc with turns until the total length of the slipper equals the length of your foot, plus 1rnd more. Then fold the short edge of the slipper in half fith the right side inside. Break yarn but leave about 20cm / 8in long tail for sewing. Thread the yarn needle with the tail and sew the two folded edges together. That way you have made a heel. Weave in end.
Upper edge opening
Flip the slipper inside out to the right side. Attach yarn in the place where you started making the heel (left or right marker), and continue with sc in the round.
Rnd 1 – On the front edge work as many sc as the number of sts. Along the rest of the opening work 1sc in every rnd of the heel.
Rnd 2 – Continue with sc, but in the place between the heel and and front opening decrease 1st on each side. At the same time decrease 2 more sts on the left and right sides of the slipper.
Rnd 3 – Like rnd 2.
Rnd 4 – Like rnd 2 but on the front part work sc, while on the side of the heel work hdc.
Break yarn, weave in end.
Make the other slipper in the same way.
Strap for the right Slipper
Row 1 – Attach yarn in the place where you started the heel, left marker. Ch13 and turn.
Row 2 – Ch1, 12sc, sl.st in st next to marker. Turn.
Row 3 – 11sc, ch1, skip 1, 2sc. Turn. (Ch1 is a buttonhole.)
Row 4 – Ch1, 1sc, 1sc in ch1-space, sc to the end. Sl.st. in 3rd st from marker. Break yarn, weave in end.
Strap for the left slipper
Work like for the right slipper but as a mirror image.
Finishing
Sew one button onto every slipper where the strap button hole will be closing it.
