Moon Duchess - Crochet Wrap
Seeking symmetry: How I Transformed the “Duchess Shawl” into a Unique New Design
From the Classic ‘Duchess’ to a Mirror Effect: The Story of the crochet ‘Moon Duchess’ Wrap
When I first created the ‘Duchess’ shawl, the idea was simple: a crochet wrap with front panels shaped as semi-circles, and a full circle for the back. Additionally, there were petite triangular motifs to join the front and back sides. The result was elegant, feminine, and versatile. However, as it often happens with the creative process, I wondered—what if I changed the perspective? This thought became the starting point for the ‘Moon Duchess’ crochet wrap. I experimented by flipping the front panels, creating a mirror-like effect. As a result, symmetry and reflection immediately added a new dimension to the design, bringing a touch of mystery and luxury.
The Transformation Process
It’s fascinating how small changes can lead to an entirely new piece. In other words, there was no need for complicated adjustments—I simply played with the arrangement and how the elements came together. Consequently, this process reminded me how important it is to explore different options and not be afraid to experiment.
The Inspiration Behind the Name
The name ‘Moon Duchess’ comes from the idea of reflection and symmetry in several ways. Firstly, the round shape of the back piece and half-circle front panels reminded me of the Moon in different stages of its cycle—the full moon and half moon. Secondly, flipping the front panels was like an image of the Moon reflecting on water and creating an illusion of having another Moon, in mirror-shaped image, on its surface. Lastly, the name perfectly captures the balance of simplicity and elegance I aimed to achieve. After all, the Moon Duchess is a simpler project than its predecessor – the Duchess Shawl.
A Call to Creativity
If you love experimenting with different shapes and arrangements, this project is a great example of how a small change can result in something entirely new. Let your imagination run free, and don’t be afraid to overlap, rotate, and explore symmetry in your work—you never know what creation might surprise you!
In the photos below you can see the length and shape of the wrap from all sides. Moon Duchess crochet wrap has a pattern identical to the Duchess Shawl. However, instead of 1 full circle, 2 semi-circles, and 2 triangles, this piece consists of the full circle motif for the back and 2 front panels which I’ve flipped mirror-wise. Being made from sport yarn, the front parts are big enough to overlap and be fastened with a belt for a more sophisticated, elegant look.

instructions in a nutshell
You can crochet the Moon Duchess wrap just like the Duchess Shawl, with the difference that the front panels are flipped over mirror-view. Additionally, I left out the triangular motifs which connect the front and back pieces of the Duchess Shawl.
If we compare the front panels of Duchess Shawl with front panels of Moon Duchess wrap, we will see that the shawl has straight edges which fall to the center, while in the Moon Duchess wrap these are curved lines. That is all the modification you need to do when joining the pieces.
In further text you’ll find a brief description of the crocheting process, and for more detailed instructions read the article Duchess Shawl.
Step 1 – The Back
The back, which is the main piece, is made by crocheting in the rounds following the 2 diagrams given. The work has 30 rounds.
Step 2 – Front Panels
Front panels of the Moon Duchess are 2 separately crocheted half-circles. To rnd 6 they are crocheted in rounds, while from 7. to 30. round the work is done in turns, following the same diagrams as for the full-circle motif.
Step 3 – Joining
After completing the 29th round/row of each piece, in the last, 30th round/row the pieces are assembled as you go by doing 5ch stitches.
