In fact, once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever crocheted hats without it.
The wire is crocheted directly into the final round (or sometimes a few rounds) of your brim, becoming an integral part of the structure. The result is a brim that’s soft to the touch but firm enough to resist folding, collapsing, or flopping in the wind. Best of all, you can gently shape it with your hands and it will stay in place—a huge advantage when it comes to wearability and style.
Choosing the Wire for Crochet
As for the wire itself, there are several types you can use. In some countries, you can find special millinery wire in craft stores or online, which comes with plastic-coated ends or connectors that allow you to form a clean, circular closure. These are ideal, but not always easy to find.
In Serbia, I couldn’t locate that kind of specialized wire, so I turned to a more accessible alternative—tin wire. It’s available in most hardware stores and works well for this purpose.
Another great option is insulated electrical wire. It’s soft enough to manipulate and strong enough to hold the shape. Plus, because it’s made of multiple twisted fibers inside, you can simply open the ends and twist them together to create a smooth, seamless closure that disappears inside your stitches.
Once you’ve tried this technique, you’ll never go back to floppy brims again!

Heklanje preko žice je najefikasniji način da dobijete čvrst, a istovremeno savitljiv obod šešira koji lepo drži formu. Bilo da pravite šešir za sunce, letnji kloš šešir ili bilo koji drugi model sa strukturom, ova tehnika je i praktična i vrlo jednostavna za usvajanje. Zapravo, kada je jednom probate, pitaćete se kako ste uopšte pravili šešire bez nje.
Žica se obično ubacuje u poslednji red (ili nekoliko poslednjih redova) oboda i postaje sastavni deo same konstrukcije. Rezultat je obod koji je mekan na dodir, ali dovoljno čvrst da ne pada, ne savija se i ne leti na vetru. Najbolje od svega je što možete blago da ga oblikujete rukama, i on će ostati baš tako kako ste ga namestili—što je velika prednost i u pogledu udobnosti i stila.
Izbor žice za heklanje
Kada je u pitanju izbor žice, postoji više opcija. U nekim zemljama se u specijalizovanim prodavnicama može naći žica za izradu šešira, koja dolazi sa plastičnim krajevima ili spojnicama koje omogućavaju elegantno zatvaranje u krug. To je idealno rešenje, ali često nije dostupno.
U Srbiji nisam uspela da pronađem takvu specijalizovanu žicu, pa sam se odlučila za pristupačniju varijantu—kalajisanu (limenu) žicu. Može se nabaviti u većini gvožđarskih radnji i sasvim lepo služi svrsi.
Druga dobra opcija je izolovana električna žica. Dovoljno je meka da se lako oblikuje, a opet dovoljno čvrsta da drži formu. Uz to, kako je unutra sastavljena od više tankih vlakana, krajeve možete rasplitati i uvrnuti jedan u drugi, čime dobijate uredan, gotovo nevidljiv spoj koji se potpuno gubi unutar petlji.
Kada jednom savladate ovu tehniku, više se nikada nećete vratiti na obode koji padaju!
